Immerse yourself in centuries of history and culture across the Mediterranean and the Adriatic. Wake up in the cosmopolitan heart of Barcelona one morning, and anchor in a boutique harbor so small you can see the cliffside villas right from the railing the next. Discover the perfect ship based on the ports that matter most to you, whether you prefer the peak heat of August or the cooler, quieter shoulder months.

Exploring Mediterranean ports requires a bit of planning. While you can walk directly into Barcelona's Gothic Quarter from some piers, reaching Rome's Colosseum requires an hour-and-a-half journey from the port of Civitavecchia. We recommend dedicating your morning to one major site—like the Acropolis in Athens or the ruins of Pompeii—rather than rushing through multiple cities before your ship departs in the afternoon.

Cruises usually run seven to fourteen nights and depart from Barcelona, Civitavecchia for Rome, and Piraeus for Athens. Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, Celebrity, and Cunard all sail the region, and the luxury lines sail it too. When the itinerary says Venice, the ship usually docks at Ravenna or Trieste, not in the lagoon. Explore side-by-side comparisons of routes, ports, and included fares to find an itinerary that perfectly matches your travel style.

Barcelona and the waterfront
Barcelona is a common start. The Gothic Quarter is a walk from some of the piers.

A Greek-island cruise of about a week tends to include Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete. An Adriatic cruise of about a week tends to include Dubrovnik, Kotor, and Split, with the ship in Ravenna or Trieste rather than Venice. A cruise of about a week that starts in Barcelona tends to include Palma, Marseille, Nice, or Monaco. You can walk straight into Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter from some piers. The Colosseum is in Rome, about an hour to an hour and a half from Civitavecchia. The Acropolis is in Athens, about 30 to 45 minutes from Piraeus. Pompeii, the Roman city buried by Vesuvius, is the stop near Naples. Give the morning to one of those great sights. A 14- to 18-day cruise from the United Kingdom can include ports from more than one of those coasts.

The routes

  • Greece — Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Crete
  • Italy — Rome, reached from Civitavecchia, and the Amalfi coast on the sailings that stop there
  • Venice — from Ravenna or Trieste. Large ships do not dock in the lagoon
  • Spain — Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville when the ship stops there
  • France — Marseille, Nice, Monaco
  • The Adriatic — Dubrovnik, Kotor, Split
  • The Balearics — Mallorca and the islands

Worth going ashore for

  • Santorini. You come ashore by small boat from the caldera
  • Athens, from Piraeus
  • Rome, from Civitavecchia
  • Florence is reached from Livorno. Pisa is its own city, not a neighborhood of Florence
  • Venice, from Ravenna or Trieste
  • Dubrovnik, Kotor, and Split
  • Amalfi, when you come ashore by small boat
  • Barcelona, Palma, Marseille, Nice, and Monaco

Many stops end in the afternoon. The Gothic Quarter is in Barcelona, and you can walk there from some piers. The Colosseum and the museums are in Rome. Civitavecchia is about an hour to an hour and a half away. The Acropolis is in Athens, about 30 to 45 minutes from Piraeus. When the ship stays overnight, or sails as late as 10 p.m., the evening in the city is open. A reserved dinner can be part of those extra nights.

When to go

The weather in May and June is the most comfortable: warm water, long light, and cruise fares that have not yet reached the August fare. In September the water is still warm, and fewer people are in the ports. In winter, most of these cruises are repositioning crossings, with more days at sea and fewer days in port.

What to expect in port

The Gothic Quarter is in Barcelona. The Colosseum is in Rome. Civitavecchia is about an hour to an hour and a half away. The Acropolis is in Athens, about 30 to 45 minutes from Piraeus.

Time in port
The ship is often in port for a long stretch, sometimes by tender. The useful hours are early, before the alleys fill.
Worth the time
The Acropolis is in Athens. The Acropolis Museum beside it holds the sculptures from the site. The Ancient Agora is nearby. The National Archaeological Museum holds the Mycenaean gold and the classical bronzes. St. Peter’s is in Rome, and the Vatican Museums hold the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The Colosseum and the Forum are in the city too. The ship docks at Civitavecchia. Rome is about an hour and a half from the pier. Lunch can fit if the ship leaves later. Rome Cavalieri, a Waldorf Astoria hotel, is a hotel for the nights before or after the cruise. On the Amalfi coast there is time for a long lunch.
Travelers
This suits people who want a new city on most mornings. The weather in May, June, September, and October is easier than the weather in August.
Also
Give the morning to the Acropolis, or to one town. There is not time for both.
