Discover a perfect blend of beach relaxation and British colonial charm among the blush-pink sands of Horseshoe Bay. Whether you want a quick seven-night getaway departing from Boston, New York, or Baltimore—including relaxing sea days on either end—or an extended island stay, we will design the perfect Bermuda escape.

Most ships dock at the historic Royal Naval Dockyard on the west end of the island. From there, take a 30-minute taxi ride to the pink sands of Horseshoe Bay, ride a scenic 20-minute ferry across the harbor to the capital of Hamilton, or ride an hour by bus to the quiet pastel streets of St. George's. Because many Bermuda itineraries feature an overnight stay, you can explore all three areas at a relaxed pace without rushing back for a sailing time—leaving plenty of time to seek out a local fish sandwich on raisin bread.

Most Bermuda cruises run about seven nights and depart from Boston, New York, or Baltimore. Ships dock at the Royal Naval Dockyard, on the west end. Many stay overnight, so there is time for the beach and both towns. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and Celebrity are the lines that regularly sail there.

St. George's is at the east end, about an hour by bus, with pastel streets and white roofs.

Boston, New York, or Baltimore as the departure port

In port

  • Horseshoe Bay, about 30 minutes by taxi from the Dockyard
  • A small beach beside the Dockyard, if the ship is only there for a few hours
  • Hamilton, about 20 minutes by ferry
  • St. George's, at the east end, about an hour by bus
  • Gibbs Hill lighthouse, above the south shore
  • A fish sandwich on raisin bread, in Hamilton
  • A drink of rum and pineapple

The water

  • The water is shallow, clear, and warm enough for swimming most of the year.
  • Snorkel, kayak, or paddleboard from the beach
  • A day under sail from the harbour
  • Watch the sunset from a beach bar rather than from the ship.

Horseshoe Bay’s sand is pale pink from crushed shell and coral. That beach is not at the pier. The Dockyard has a small beach if the ship is only there for a few hours.

When to go

Sailing season to Bermuda stretches from April through October. While summer brings warmth, the weather is often at its absolute best during the pleasant shoulder months of late spring and early fall.

What to expect in port

King’s Wharf is the dock. The fort and the shops are a walk from the ship. The rest of the island is a taxi, a bus, or the ferry.

Time in port
Ships usually stay more than a day, so you do not have to see the island between breakfast and the time you have to be back on the ship.
Worth the time
Stop in St. George’s to see St. Peter’s Church. The town is quiet enough that you do not need a timed tour. In Hamilton, order a fish sandwich on raisin bread.
Travelers
This suits people who want a short sailing from the East Coast, with time on one island.
Also
Tobacco Bay, near St. George's, is a sheltered beach with rock formations. Crystal Caves is a short visit, and cooler than the beach.
