What you can do in port in Australia and New Zealand

A coastal sailing, a New Zealand loop, and a Tasman crossing do not share the same ports.

A harbor city in Australia or New Zealand

Sydney and Auckland can run long. Milford Sound is often a scenic sail, and you stay on the ship. A boat to the Great Barrier Reef takes most of the time the ship is in Cairns.

The walk along Circular Quay toward the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge

Sydney

Ships typically dock at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay or at White Bay.

From Circular Quay, you can walk to the Opera House and the historic Rocks district. If your ship docks at White Bay, a short ride is required to reach the city center. To visit the long, curved sandy beach of Bondi, expect a 30-minute ride east.

Auckland

Ships dock at Princes Wharf or Queens Wharf.

The waterfront is at the pier. Mount Eden is a volcanic cone. The ride from the wharf takes about 15 minutes, and you look back over the harbor from the rim. You walk the rim. You do not climb into the crater.

Melbourne

Ships dock at Station Pier in Port Melbourne.

A convenient tram ride of 20 to 30 minutes takes you from the pier into the city center, where you can explore Melbourne's famous laneways and café culture.

Milford Sound

Most large ships do not dock. They sail into the sound and leave again.

You watch the cliffs and the waterfalls from the deck. A smaller ship may tender. There is no town at the head of the sound for a large ship to use.

Cairns

Many ships use Yorkeys Knob.

The city is about 25 minutes from that pier. The Great Barrier Reef has the coral and the fish. A boat from the reef fleet takes about an hour to an hour and a half, and that trip takes most of the time the ship is in port.
