What you can do in port in Hawaii

Pride of America stays among the islands and often remains into the evening. A crossing from California has fewer hours in Honolulu.

A green Hawaiian valley meeting the Pacific

The road to Hana takes longer than a beach on the west side of Maui. When the ship leaves that afternoon, pick one. A luau needs the ship in port after dark.

Honolulu

Honolulu

Ships use the piers near Aloha Tower.

Waikiki is east of the pier. The ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Pearl Harbor is west. The ride takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The Arizona Memorial stands over the battleship that sank there. A short stop does not leave time for both Waikiki and Pearl Harbor.

Maui

The ship docks at Kahului.

The road to Hana starts east of the harbor, with waterfalls and a black-sand beach along it. Kaanapali is on the west coast. The ride from Kahului takes about 40 to 50 minutes, and the sand there is pale. Haleakalā is the volcano above the island.

Kauai

The ship docks at Nawiliwili.

Kalapaki Beach is beside the harbor. Waimea Canyon is inland, a red gorge. The ride from the pier takes about an hour. The Nāpali coast is the cliffs you see from a boat or from the air, not from the dock.

Hilo

The ship docks downtown.

A short ride from the pier reaches Rainbow Falls. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is south. The ride there takes about 45 minutes. You walk the rim overlooks. You do not walk into the crater.

Kona

Many ships tender into Kailua-Kona.

The seawall and the shops are in town once you land. The coffee farms are up the mountain. Kona coffee is grown on those slopes.
