What you can do in port in Northern Europe

Geiranger is a fjord village in Norway. Copenhagen is a Baltic capital. Iceland and Amsterdam are on other sailings.

A steep green fjord dropping to still water

Most stops end in the afternoon. An overnight in Copenhagen or Stockholm leaves the evening free. Ocean ships for Amsterdam dock at IJmuiden, not in the canals.

Bryggen, the wooden wharf you can walk to from the ship in Bergen

Bergen

Ships dock by the harbor.

You can walk from the ship to Bryggen, the old wooden wharf. The fish market serves a shrimp sandwich: cold peeled shrimp on buttered bread, with mayonnaise and lemon.

Geiranger

Ships anchor in the fjord. You come ashore by tender, if the weather allows.

The village is small. The waterfalls are on the cliffs above the water, and you can see them from the deck. A bus goes up the road if you want the view from above the fjord.

Flåm

Many ships dock beside the village.

The Flåm Railway starts near the pier and climbs the valley. You see the waterfalls from the train. The village itself is small.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen

Ocean ships use Oceankaj or Langelinie.

Nyhavn is the canal in the center. The ride from Oceankaj takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Rosenborg holds the crown jewels. A New Nordic menu is local seafood, vegetables, and foraged herbs, and those tables are booked before you sail.

Stockholm

Stockholm

Ships often dock at Frihamnen or Värtahamnen.

The ride into the center takes about 15 to 25 minutes. Gamla Stan is the old town. The Vasa Museum holds the warship Vasa, raised from the harbor. Grand Hôtel looks across the water at the palace.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Ocean ships dock at IJmuiden, not in the canals.

The Rijksmuseum holds Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. The ride from the pier takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The Anne Frank House is the rooms where she hid. The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is a hotel for the nights before or after the cruise.

Hallgrímskirkja, the church you can walk to from the pier in Reykjavik

Reykjavik

The ship docks near the old harbor.

You can walk to Hallgrímskirkja from the pier. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal pool on the lava field toward the airport. The ride from the pier takes about 45 minutes. It is not beside the ship.
